As a famous award-winning actress, mother and home-maker, and, a hard-working humanitarian and a knowledgeable adult testifying before congressional committees for the rights of handicapped persons, Nanette Fabray has been honored many times by her peers and the public. She received two Donaldson Awards (precursor to the Tony awards and a Tony award for “Love Life”. She won three Emmys with Sid Caesar, and appeared for six years in the hit TV series “One Day at Time. “ On the comedy “Coach” she played the mother of her real life niece Shelley Fabares.
The Screen Actors Guild gave her their highest honor, the Humanitarian Award. TV editors selected her as an American Woman of the Year. She’s been the honorary mayor of her home town Pacific Palisades and received the Fashion Academy Award as one of the ten best women in America. In 2001 UCLA Center on Aging gave her the Icon of the Year Award.
She had a presidential appointment as a founding board member to the National Council on the Disabled, which wrote the American with Disabilities Act. She is a founding board member of the National Captioning Institute, and a board member of the Presidents Committee on the Handicapped.
Her many honors include, the President’s Distinguished Service Award, the Eleanor Roosevelt Humanitarian Award, the California Museum of Science and Industry ‘Woman of the World’, three honorary doctorates and numerous other awards, including the Living Legacy Award. She and Helen Keller are the only women to receive the Public Service Award from the American Academy of Otolaryngology.
Of her many accomplishments, Nanette says her finest achievement is her son, Jamie MacDougal, who is a dermatologist in Manhattan Beach, and made her a two time grandmother in 1995 and 1998.
Women’s International Center once again welcomes Nanette to the Living Legacy Awards as our special guest hostess and to present the 2004 Award to Operation Smile.
