HISTORY OF WOMEN THROUGH ART
Since the beginning of humanity, women have been worshipped, adored, cherished, celebrated, imitated, wooed, and admired. Women also have been defamed, castigated, condemned, abused, maligned, raped, and murdered.
Women can be lovers, wives, mothers, healers, writers, artists, inventors, queens, princesses, presidents, administrators, tradespeople, laborers, aviators, astronauts, navigators, recording artists, and soldiers. They are served by, and serve many. Women give to all walks of life, yet are also considered more than mere mortals, because they remain the source of all life.
Because women symbolize so much to so many, they have been depicted on cave walls and in oil portraits. They are a favorite subject of artists in all genres, since they represent beauty and bounty, mayhem and madness, courage and constancy, seduction and sex, nakedness and style. They are the world to the world, birth givers, nurturers, mentors and molders of the present and future.
Internationally known artist, Joanne Battiste, a good friend to Women's International Center and to women everywhere, has graciously allowed us to exhibit some of her art on our website. The series appearing on this site is entitled "Heroines". There are over fifty paintings showing the gifts of women throughout history. Joanne also paints very large paintings, often whimsical, depicting women escaping from "dead end" situations and stereotypes. Ms. Battiste resides and has her studio in Colorado Springs, Colorado, USA.
