Annie Gutierrez Greatness Through Fairness A nationally and internationally recognized attorney, Annie Gutierrez devotes enormous time and expertise to the reform of social and legal policies affecting U.S.-Mexico-Central American relations, emphasizing criminal defense and civil rights protection. She was one of the first 50 people to work for the Peace Corps, becoming Program- Officer for the East Coast of South America. Later, she was appointed judicial judge in Imperial County, California, and served a six-year term. Soon after receiving her Juris Doctorate from Stanford Law School, she became the first executive secretary to the Agricultural Labor Relations Board, where she acted as troubleshooter for the Board during some very troubled times. Then she was made Associate Director for justice and Civil Rights, Domestic Policy Staff, during the Carter Administration. In 1978, Mrs. Gutierrez was appointed District Director for Mexico and Central America, U.S. Immigration and Naturalization Services, at the American Embassy in Mexico. In championing the rights of others, Annie Gutierrez has made a vivid impact, bringing about great advances in the civil and human rights of the Latin community both in the U.S. and abroad. When no one else would help the farm workers, Annie Gutierrez did. She's that kind of human being. |
